MTP is not "propietary". It is a USB standard, and is virtually used by every other device out there that does not use Mass Storage (with the iPhone as a glaring exception, which uses an *actual* propietary protocol).
It is certainly true that MTP will show more compatibility problems than USB Mass Storage (which can't be used), but... *any other solution* will show *even more* compatibility problems.
Virtually the only problems with MTP as standard are:
- No partial file transfer (ie only full files can be transfered, no "parts of"). Google has solved this with some *propietary* extensions on top of the MTP standard.
- Single transfer at a time (I believe this to be a minor problem, tbh).
- Standard is overcomplicated.
A way of action would be to figure out what people think "is broken" with MTP. Personally I got it to work flawlessly a few months (after some time patching around some Gnome 'features') but I just checked and it's broken again on my PC because of recent updates.
